Selecting The Right Ball: And Other Bowling Tips For Beginners

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Bowling is a great pastime, and makes for some great times out. However, if you really want to take it up quite seriously, omitting to learn some of the more important skills can easily discourage you from going further. Here is a quick guide to some of the best bowling tips for beginners.

The first things to focus on is the ball selection; which can have huge consequences in mastering the game. It is vital ensure that the correct weight of ball is selected, and that it fits well into your hand.

 BYOB (Buy Your Own Ball)

Whilst house balls are okay for the casual bowler, for anyone wishing to make a go of the game, it is always advisable to buy your own ball. Prices do not have to be outrageous; even when you have the finger holes drilled for comfort; try looking online for the best deals, and as a rule, try not to buy anything from your local bowling center which always add a premium.

Shoes

Shoes are also important of course and again, these should not be limited to those on offer from the house selection. Quite apart from the hygiene issue of course, there is always a question over the condition of the shoe.

It is important to get a pair of bowling shoes that are a good fit, provide support, and allow for a smooth and friction free glide across the alley floor.

Develop Your Style

Once these items are sorted, which should not cost more than one hundred bucks; you can work on developing your style. To start however, develop your stance and the number of steps you take. Work on what is comfortable, before trying any particular technique though.

There are many other Bowling tips for beginners of course, these few a fundamental however. Once you feel comfortable through your bowling action, it will be time to explore further.

Your Neighborhood Bowling Alley

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The bowling alley is a popular entertainment center for people of all ages. No matter where you are, in the modern day, it is difficult to drive very far without passing a bowling alley. The sport of bowling has steadily increased in popularity over the past century, which has, in turn, increased the demand to support this game.

Although the sport of bowling has been traced back to 3200 BC Egypt, standardization of the game did not come into play until the late-19th century. In the primitive stages of the game people set the pins at the end of each lane after each player bowled. These pinsetters were later replaced by a mechanical pinsetter that would automatically set the pins after each bowl. This efficiency was the dawn of technology in the bowling alley, and helped to spur even more interest in bowling. The mechanical ball return also did the same for the game.

With Bowling organizations for all groups of people “men, women, and children” bowling has become a sport oriented to families as well as people of all ages. In many cases, a bowling alley will offer special attractions geared toward all age groups, including video games, table games, and snack bars. At night, many turn down the bright lights, turn up the black lights, and employ the use of fluorescent colored pins and decorations in conjunction with popular music to add to the entertainment factor and draw a young, hip crowd. Additionally, it often will provide space to accommodate children’s birthday parties and community fund raising events.

The term “alley” has often carried the connotation of a dark, dingy, smoky lair of gambling and other crooked affairs. It was this same connotation that caused all early ninepins alleys to be outlawed in Connecticut in the mid-19th century, which in turn, created the common tenpins played in North America. It is increasingly popular for a bowling alley to be referred to as a bowling center. This helps to promote the more positive and friendly environment for which bowling has truly come to be known. It is also a more realistic representation of what is in store for those who enter the doors of their local bowling “establishment.”

At first glance, one may argue that each bowling center is the same. Dozens of bowling lanes, countless Bowling Balls lined up on tiered racks for bowlers to utilize, multi-colored bowling shoes for rent, the arcade, and the snack bar are all common. However, it is the character of each bowling alley that is so alluring. Some are old, some are new; some are smaller and some are quite large; some are decorated with trophies; and some decorated with colorful artwork and murals throughout. But the charm of the atmosphere is never the same from one to the next. Decades of evolution have fashioned it into an indoor entertainment center in which families and friends of all ages can take pleasure.

Finding The Best Bowling Alley

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Are you looking for something fun to do with the whole family? Are you wondering what you can do that is inexpensive, fun for the whole family, and a great way to get out and meet new people? When was the last time you visited your local bowling alley?

When choosing a bowling alley, look for great value and low cost, but also choose a convenient location that offers everything that you require. Some people like to bowl for only a couple of hours, while others like to make a day of it.

Does your bowling alley feature free shoe rentals or other perks? What about a place to get drinks, snacks, even hot dogs and hamburgers? If you’re spending a day in the lanes, you might want these available to you. Bowling is hard work and, although not as physically demanding as some other sports, being properly hydrated is very important.

You may also want to look for a bowling alley with extra features, such as discounts on certain days or a game room with pool tables and video games. Another feature to consider is whether or not smoking is allowed. Some alleys allow it and others do not.

Another thing to consider, when choosing an alley, is that some alleys offer “Cosmic bowling”, usually only one night a week. “Cosmic Bowling” is when they turn the normal lighting off during these hours and often replace it with bright neon lighting and sometimes strobe lights and bass-driven techno music. Some enjoy the club house feel to these nights, which are often priced differently than regular bowling hours, while others may find the lights and loud music creates too much distraction.

Almost every bowling alley will offer regular league games, which often require a fee to sign up, but which is usually cheaper in the long run for those who like to bowl on a regular basis. Adult leagues and children’s leagues are both a great way to get out and meet people, share some friendly competition, and play to win awards and trophies. Some may also feature senior leagues for the young at heart.

If you’ve never been bowling before, but would like to try it for the first time, don’t be shy about asking for a personal instructor. Some bowling alleys may list instruction as an option but, if not, don’t assume it’s not available. It never hurts to ask. Most people who work at a bowling alley are quite good at the game themselves and have been playing for years. Most of them are more than happy to teach you the basics for no cost but, if you would like further one-on-one training and assistance, there will be a fee.

So remember, when choosing a bowling alley, that not all alleys are alike. Know what options are available when making a selection, and choose a place that is convenient, inexpensive, in good condition, and offers the perks and the style of games that you like to play.
