Selecting The Right Ball: And Other Bowling Tips For Beginners

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Bowling is a great pastime, and makes for some great times out. However, if you really want to take it up quite seriously, omitting to learn some of the more important skills can easily discourage you from going further. Here is a quick guide to some of the best bowling tips for beginners.

The first things to focus on is the ball selection; which can have huge consequences in mastering the game. It is vital ensure that the correct weight of ball is selected, and that it fits well into your hand.

 BYOB (Buy Your Own Ball)

Whilst house balls are okay for the casual bowler, for anyone wishing to make a go of the game, it is always advisable to buy your own ball. Prices do not have to be outrageous; even when you have the finger holes drilled for comfort; try looking online for the best deals, and as a rule, try not to buy anything from your local bowling center which always add a premium.

Shoes

Shoes are also important of course and again, these should not be limited to those on offer from the house selection. Quite apart from the hygiene issue of course, there is always a question over the condition of the shoe.

It is important to get a pair of bowling shoes that are a good fit, provide support, and allow for a smooth and friction free glide across the alley floor.

Develop Your Style

Once these items are sorted, which should not cost more than one hundred bucks; you can work on developing your style. To start however, develop your stance and the number of steps you take. Work on what is comfortable, before trying any particular technique though.

There are many other Bowling tips for beginners of course, these few a fundamental however. Once you feel comfortable through your bowling action, it will be time to explore further.

Do You Understand Cricket ?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Cricket is a sport that was created in England during the eighteenth century. At that time it was primarily played by the English aristocrats.

With the expansion of the British Empire, the game was taken to the British colonies – Australia, India, Pakistan and West Indies. In fact these countries together with England are still the major cricket playing nations in the world today.

How is cricket played?

1. The playing area

Cricket is played on an oval area of grass which is known as the cricket field. At the centre of the field is a rectangular area known as the pitch. At either end of the pitch an area is marked out by three wooden sticks or stumps. The distance between each stump cannot be greater than the diameter of the cricket ball. Between each stump, two further pieces of wood are place on top – these are known as the “bails”. The Bails together with the stumps form the wicket.

Adjacent to either side of the wicket, horizontal lines are marked on the pitch with chalk to create what is known as the “popping crease” which completes the pitch.

A rope is placed around the entire perimeter of the cricket field which plays a role in scoring the game which will be explained in a moment.

2. The Teams

The game is played between two teams made up of eleven players. These players themselves are made up of specialist batsman and bowlers – although, some players such as the English cricketer Andrew Flintoff is what is known as an “all rounder” as he specializes in both batting and bowling.

All players in a team are required to field and each player takes up a position in the field as dictated by the captain. The captain will tend to alter his field according to who is Bowling from his team and who is batting on the opposing team.

The positions that players field in on the pitch tend to have quirky names such as “silly point” and “long on”. As you watch the game one starts to become familiar with these different fielding positions.

3. How to play the game

At the beginning of each game, the two opposing captains meet at the wicket together with the ‘umpire’ who referees the match. One captain tosses a coin to decide which team will bat first.

The idea is for the batting team to score as many runs as possible and then bowl out the opposing teams for less runs than they scored.

The batting team enters the field with two batsmen, who take up a position at each of the two wickets. The fielding captain assigns one of his bowlers to bowl the cricket ball from one wicket towards the batsman at the other wicket. Each bowler bowls six balls in succession, known as an “over.”

A batsman can be given out after each ball bowled if he or she:

A) Hit the ball to an opposing fielder without the ball touching the ground.

B) If they do not attempt to play a shot in front of the wicket and the ball hits their gloves before being caught by a fieldsman.

C) If the bowler bowls a ball at the wicket and it hits the batsman on the leg in front of the wicket without the batsman playing a shot – this is known as “leg before wicket” or “lbw.”

The batsman can score by hitting the ball into a space that is not occupied by a fielder and than running to the opposite wicket. The other batsman runs in the opposite direction and one run is then scored. The other batsman will now receive the next ball from the bowler.

If a batsman hits a ball and it runs all the way to the boundary of the field and crosses the rope, then four runs are scored.

If the batsman hits the ball over the boundary rope without the ball touching the rope, then six runs are scored automatically.

When the fielding team dismisses the whole of the batting team, then it is their turn to bat. They will be trying to score more runs then the batting team to win the game.

A cricket match can either be a ‘one day’ game – meaning that each team bats and fields only once to win the game. A game can also last five days; this is known as a ‘test match’ in which each team bats and field twice throughout the game.

The team that scores the most runs after the second round of batting is declared the winner.

Cricket is viewed as a complicated game to play and understand, however, it is also an exciting game so if you have not yet caught the cricket bug then what are you waiting for? Go and watch a game!!!!

Create a Home Business – Create a More Secure Future

Monday, June 14th, 2010

You only need to look at the headlines to see what your future may hold, and it isn’t pretty. Corporate bankruptcies that wipe out employee pension funds, while CEO’s not only keep their jobs, but are paid millions; many homes working the first half of the year just to pay their tax bills; the bleak future of social security that at best may force many Americans to work until age 70, if it exists at all and most recently the report that personal savings for 2006 dropped to the lowest level in 74 years. Any of these separately are bad enough, but many workers are the victim of several of these, creating an uncertain future for themselves and their families.

What’s the answer? To many, like me, that has come in the form of a home business. Thousands each year are turning to a home business as a way to supplement or replace their income and provide them with the time freedom that they desire to pursue other interests (besides fighting traffic, being at the beck and call of a boss, and working to make other people significant sums of money, while barely getting by themselves). But, what should one look for when deciding what business they should pursue?

Here are the major points that I suggest:

1) Look for a business that offers products that are consumable. Security comes in creating residual streams of income (those that pay you over and over for work you do once). The best consumable products are those used on a monthly basis: subscriptions, telephone services, and nutritional products are just a few examples that fall into this category.

Perhaps you could have a home business selling Bowling balls, but you would constantly need to be on the lookout for new customers and never have a business that provides you with a “walk away income.” High quality products, consumed on a regular (monthly) basis, that provide a service that the customer will use long-term, will provide you with the kind of business you’re looking for.

2) Select a business that can be built utilizing the power of the internet. Who wants to go from being tied to a desk to being tied to your own brick and mortar business? The internet makes it possible to business from virtually anywhere, 24/7 (in fact, I’m betting many of you will read this while I’m sleeping).

Home businesses used to have to be built locally, door to door, but no more. It’s just as easy today to get involved with a home business that offers an opportunity to build internationally, as it is to be strictly a local endeavor.

3) Company stability is of major importance when selecting your home business. Remember, most businesses fail within the first five years after they launch, so be very careful getting involved with a company that hasn’t passed this benchmark.

The longer the company has been around, the better their track record and also the easier it is to get detailed information that will assist you in determining the legitimacy of the opportunity.

Also, it’s easier to gain information if the company is publicly traded as opposed to being privately held, as they are required to make documents such as financial records available to the public at large.

4) Finally, look for a business where you can take advantage of a growing trend that appears to have staying power. You just have to look back to see how many of today’s millionaires made their money, by getting in front of trends like computers, housing booms, etc. There are growing trends linked to home businesses that are about to explode, find them.

Ok, there’s some serious food for thought when it comes to getting started with a home business. There are other factors to be considered, but these are some of the major items that you need to get a handle on when making a decision as to which opportunity is best for you to build your future on (and your future is certainly better in your control and in the control of others).

The Real Da Vinci Code: Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man and Buckminster Fuller

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Understanding the work of Buckminster Fuller can help us appreciate who we really are. The Real Da Vinci Code, Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man, is a code to help us understand some of Buckminster Fuller’s greatest insights.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man (the Da Vinci Man with four arms and four legs in a square and circle) is the most popular secular symbol in the world. My ten years of research suggests that the Vitruvian Man is a universal symbol for greater love, relationships, success, health and the new age 21st century paradigm of indivisible wholeness, the paradigm for world peace. A New Renaissance!

The Da Vinci Man is a universal translator between scientific models (represented by the Da Vinci Man in the square) and religious symbols (represented by the Da Vinci Man in the circle). It is, therefore, a bridge between science and religion. There are amazing similarities between the sacred geometry of the Da Vinci Man, Yin-Yang, Star of David, Tree of Life, Christian Cross, Angels and Kabbalah.

Leonardo said it best: “The outstretched arms and legs of a man form a square and a circle: the square symbolizes the solid physical world and the circle the spiritual and eternal. Man bridges the gap between these two worlds.”
-Leonardo Da Vinci, “The Magical Proportions of Man”

Buckminster Fuller reminds me of a reincarnation of Leonardo Da Vinci. They were both consummate artists and scientists in the way they approached their work. They were also both dedicated to understanding the sacred geometry of creation.

Buckminster Fuller depicts photons (light) as tetrahedron structures. Fuller’s tetrahedrons of light emanating from the atom remind us of angels surrounding the Throne of God.

The Geodesic Dome
Buckminster Fuller is famous for the creation of the geodesic dome. It included principles of synergy (harmonious interrelationship, like the Yin and Yang synergy of the Da Vinci Man) and tensegrity (harmonious interactions of geometric forms, such that their interactive tensions balance each other and make the structure of the geodesic dome more stable). As a result, the geodesic dome is able to withstand more pressure per square inch than almost any other structure.

The Circle, Triangle and Square
Buckminster Fuller takes the circle, triangle and square into three dimensions. The Da Vinci Man is based upon the circle, triangle and square. The “circle” is the closest compactification of spheres. The “triangle” is the four triangular sides of the tetrahedron. The “square” is the diamond form created by the upper and lower triangles of the four-sided octahedron.

The geodesic dome is based upon Buckminster Fuller’s understanding of the geometry of creation. The tetrahedron is the most solid structure in creation. The tetrahedron and octahedron combine in the geodesic dome to create an octet truss. This structure is often seen within tall metal cell phone and radio signal towers. Every square structure that contains the octet truss within it is much more strong and stable.

The shape of the octet truss is based upon the closest compactification of spheres. This intuitively indicates its reliability as a fundamental all-space-filling structure in sacred geometry. One form that creates an octet truss is the rhombic dodecahedron. If you surround an octahedron with four one-half-sided tetrahedrons (two tetrahedrons split in half) you create the rhombic dodecahedron.

The essence of Fuller’s theory of structures is the vector equilibrium. At the very core of this structure is the rhombic dodecahedron. This form is created by the closest packing of spheres. As you look at one side of the rhombic dodecahedron it looks like a diamond. When you turn the geometric shape slowly, it then resembles a square. It is really awesome to behold!

The interaction between diamond and square reminds us of the two cojoined forms of the Da Vinci Person. One form is able to fill up the square, the other the diamond. The passive square gives rise to the active diamond, just like the two Da Vinci forms represent a passive “being” united with an active “becoming,” like Yin and Yang.

The Pythagorean Pentad
If you place the Da Vinci Person inside the center of the vector equilibrium, his four arms, four legs and head point to the closest packing of spheres surrounding the form. This three-dimensional form reminds one of the two-dimensional pentad of Pythagoras. Think of Bowling pins or billiard balls aligned in a triangular formation and you have the Pythagorean pentad.

The four-level pentad (also referred to as the tetrakys, meaning “four”) was used by ancients to model the four forces of natur–earth, water, fire and air. This same model is very similar to the one that describes the quark structure in the nucleus of the atom.

This same tetrakys was considered to be the mystery of the ages, and whosoever solved it was considered enlightened. The Da Vinci Man fits right inside of this structure, like a Cosmic Person, with four arms, four legs and head pointing to all nine points surrounding the triangle. The circle surrounding the Da Vinci Man is the tenth point, a transcendent superspace that contains all creation within it (from inflation theory).

The Pythagorean Pentad and Wave Functions
According to Fuller, every wave function goes through a geometric transformation from peak to trough (mountain to valley) that consists of tetrahedron, octahedron and icosahedron (with a transcendent gap in the middle at the top of the peak).

This oscillation occurs in water waves, sound waves and electromagnetic waves at thousands or millions of times per second. The Da Vinci Person fits nicely inside the center of the Pythagorean tetrakys, which resembles the three-dimensional vector equilibrium that makes up the heart of each wave.

The Tree of Life
Interestingly enough, the surface of the structure of vector equilibrium is equivalent to the Tree of Life (Kabbalah) and Tree of Jesse (Christianity). The Tree of Life consists of three pillars along which are aligned three spheres. The left pillar and right pillar function like Yin and Yang. The intermediary pillar balances the two. This is like a holy trinity found in most religions.

The Cosmic Adam-Eve fills up the ten spheres and three pillars. The Da Vinci Man, with four arms, four legs, two cojoined legs and head, also fills up the ten spheres along the three pillars, like a Cosmic Adam-Eve.

Interestingly enough, the surface of the vector equilibrium also resembles the Tree of Life. The flow of energy from the higher spheres to the lower spheres resembles a lightning flash. Amazingly, the flow on the surface of the vector equilibrium is an exact correspondence to the flow on the Tree of Life.

Predict Your Future!

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

You can predict your future. You really can predict your own success or your own failure. “Nonsense!” you say? It really is true.

Consider this. If you have absolutely no control over your future, then why worry about anything? Whatever is going to happen to you is going to happen anyway, right? That’s called fate. And believe it or not, that in and of itself is a prediction.

It is true; we have absolutely no control over many things in life. I cannot control the stock market, can you? I cannot control the housing market, can you? So many things are simply out of our control.

But, one thing is very much in your control, your own mind. You can choose to think about anything that you want to, at any given time. Right now, for example, you could choose to picture a skiing elephant.

If you did indeed, just now, picture a skiing elephant it is because you decided to think that. I may have made a suggestion, but you made a decision to think it and picture it. The same is true if you chose not to think about a skiing elephant.

So what does this have to do with predicting our future? Because we are always talking to ourselves, it has a great effect on our future. The words we speak to ourselves will either cause new things to happen in our life or they will help to perpetuate the road we are on.

Years ago, I used to go Bowling once in awhile. It was just for fun with friends and I would go once or twice a year. The scores on my first three frames were always horrible. Do you know why?

As soon as I would grab the ball when it was my turn, I had the thought, “Don’t throw it in the gutter; don’t throw it in the gutter!” That was my self-talk. And, I didn’t know it at the time, but that was my prediction. Almost always in the first three frames, I would have at least two or three gutter balls.

But, once the game got going, I would shift my focus from the ball not going into the gutter to hitting the pins. I didn’t know it, but again, that was a prediction. And even being a very inexperienced bowler, my scores increased. I even got a strike once in awhile.

Now I know there are people who say, “Oh I’ve heard all this positive stuff before and it just doesn’t work for me.” That is self-talk and that is a prediction. I have also heard people who say other things, like, “Nothing ever goes right for me; I never catch a break.” Or, “I knew that was going to happen.”

Self-talking becomes future predictions. These predictions always produce results.

Those who are successful in life don’t dwell on what they don’t want to happen, but instead they dwell on what they do want to happen. They don’t dwell on their past failures and losses. Instead, they remember past successes. These memories, whether they are successes or failures, will evoke feelings and emotions. These feelings and emotions leave an imprint on your subconscious mind which is just as vivid as a reoccurrence of success. And, these thoughts are a prediction of what is going to happen.

Many of those who teach self-help and self-esteem courses say to see yourself as though you have already achieved what you desire in life. They encourage people to positively remind themselves over and over of where they want their life to go. So much of this is based on the dynamic truth, “as he thinks in his heart so is he.”

You cannot control nor can you predict many things going on all around you. But you can control what you think about. And most importantly, you can control what you tell yourself about yourself; your self-talk.

You really can predict your own future. You can set your own course regardless of the situations and conditions of the world around you. The Creator gave you free will so that you can choose your thoughts and thus control your own self-talk.

So, what’s in your future?
