Pinehurst Golf Vacations Offer More than Just Golf

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Pinehurst golf vacations can offer you a bit more than just playing golf. Although it is not designed to provide the same family entertainment that Myrtle Beach is capable of, Pinehurst offers a choice of golf schools and a choice of entertainment and sports for the younger family members.

Pinehurst is close to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, and is best known for its golf. With around 5000 inhabitants, Pinehurst has eight main championship golf courses with a total of over forty in the surrounding area. It also boasts several good golf schools and academies, and is an excellent choice for a golf vacation.

Pinehurst Offers a Number of Sporting Options

If your family does not share your love of golf, Pinehurst offers a number of different sporting options. It is an equestrian area, and many equestrian activities are available such as horse riding and lessons, horse jumping and so on. There are many lakes nearby and boating, canoeing and other water sports are offered. Fishing and hunting are popular, but perhaps not with the younger children. They may prefer tennis and there is also carting and Bowling nearby.

Should the family want something offering more in the way of holiday fun, Myrtle Beach with its great beaches and funfairs is only a short trip away, and the nightlife at Myrtle Beach is superb.

There’s an Affinity between Pinehurst and Scotland

However, it is for the golf that people vacation in Pinehurst, and several packages are available to suit individuals, groups and family groups. The village is where Ben Hogan won his first pro tournament, and the first courses were designed by, or modified by, the great Scottish course designer, Donald Ross. There is great Scottish tradition in Pinehurst any many Scots feel an affinity with the town.

The golf schools in Pinehurst include The Pinehurst Golf Academy where you can make bookings for a golf school vacation from March to November, which is great way of getting some golf in while improving your game. You can use them to get some badly needed tuition in the fall so you are ready for the new season in the spring. It’s a great alternative to a summer golfing vacation.

If your whole family loves golf, Pinehurst would make a great vacation and the food is excellent with Japanese and other forms of international cuisine as well as the traditional American fare. You could try some Mexican for a change, though the kids might prefer a burger or hot dog.

Pinehurst Offers Golf Schools for the Beginners

You can get special family deals on the courses, and there are plenty of practice facilities available. The golf schools are good for the complete beginners in your group, but make sure you book places well in advance. The Nike Golf School is a form of camp and is great of the younger children. If you book your youngsters into the Nike camp to learn the game, and yourself and your partner into a Pinehurst resort, you get the best of both.

You both enjoy your golf, while your youngsters enjoy the camp while learning how to play. It won’t be long till they are joining you on the big courses on your next golfing vacation. Pinehurst golf vacations have a lot to offer if you think about what there is and use the resources to your best advantage.

Where to Backpack Within South East Asia

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Thailand

Thailand is usually the best place to start for the first time independent traveler. It’s very easy to get around and there are always lots of other backpackers about to chat and hang out with.

Thailand is a mixture of forests to the North for Trekking and some of the best beaches in the world in the south.

Bangkok is a buzzing city criss crossed with canals & rivers.  The sky line is one of high rises, shopping malls & international hotel chains but at the canal banks and side streets of the city the traditional side of Thai life is clearly visible.  The business hub of the city is easily navigated using the skyrail & underground but the more touristy areas around the Koh San road are less well supplied & Tuk Tuks are the main mode of transport.  Negotiate hard with your tuk tuk driver – a taxi will always be cheaper & has the advantage of air conditioning however be sure to agree that you’re charged according to the metre as opposed to agreeing a fixed price.  Taxis will only take you at an agreed price after 3pm as from this point on your in to rush hour and they are highly likely to spend hours with you stuck in traffic!

Your main point of call will be the Koh San road as this is where all the hostels and guesthouses are located. This is one long street where there is a market every night and lots of bars and restaurants to choose from even a McDonalds and Burger King for those who are want something more to home. For the best food though go to the street hawkers. You will get some of the best Pad Thai you will have ever eaten for around 20 Baht.

South Islands

Most people come to Thailand for the beaches and Diving. The main Islands in the south are:

Koh Tao

A backpacker Island where everyone comes to dive and mainly to learn how to dive. There are some great beaches here and also a good nightlife.

Koh Pan gan

This is the party island of Thailand and where the famous Full Moon party is held each month. This if you have not heard is one big crazy party on a beach which attracts at least 10,000 people each month to get as fucked up as possible. Get here a few days early during the peak months if you want to get accommodation though.

Koh Samui & Phuket

These islands are crammed full of package holiday tourists on their yearly holiday for 2 weeks in the sun. I would strongly suggest avoiding these two islands.

Koh Phi Phi

This island did get severely damaged by the Tsunami and having seen the before and after myself it truly is remarkable how quickly is has got back onto its feet. There is one main area/town where everybody stays but it’s still big enough not for everyone to be on top of each other. The Beach is like a postcard or you can get a boat to the lagoon where the Leo Dicapro film ‘The Beach’ was filmed and chill there for the day.

Vietnam

Vietnam was ravaged by war but is now a great place to visit. I suggest starting your trip off in Hanoi and working your way down the country.

Hanoi

Hanoi is the capitol of Vietnam and is a great introduction into the Vietnamese way of life. The city is always bustling and carful when crossing those roads as those motorbikes don’t stop.

The city centre is located around Hoan Kiem lake, just of the lake is the old quarter which is the main area for budget hostels and guesthouses. Hanoi is a great place to just go out and wander. Each street has its own trade and each shop will only sell products to do with that trade so you end up having streets only selling shoes or kitchenware. It’s weird to see but that’s the way they do it.

If you get tired and hot whilst walking around you can always stop off for some Bia Hoi. You will see all around the city lots of people sitting on little plastic chairs on the street, this is where they sell the Bia Hoi. This is officially the cheapest draft beer in the world. A glass should set you back about 10p/20 Cents.

Ha Long bay

This is north of Hanoi and is available from all travel agencies in the city as either overnight trip. This is a must for anyone in the area as it is UNESCO heritage site and is for a good reason.

The bay has close to 2000 limestone islands with of caves to explore and a few lagoons to go kayaking in. When you go out to the bay you go out on a traditional junk ship where you will get your own room and dinner and breakfast served.

Hoi An

Hoi An is located on the coast and actually has a pretty decent beach. It is the also the place to come for tailor-made clothes. There are too many tailors to mention here with the main road pretty much consisting of them. You can get literally anything made here all you need to do is take a photo of the item you want and they will make it for you. A good quality suit will cost around $50-$100.

Nha Trang

Is a beach resort just over halfway down the country. This city is very developed with a good long beach stretching the entire length of it. There is not much to do culturally here but it’s a good place to unwind after more than a few very long bus journeys to get this far. If you choose to just relax on the beach all day the only time you need to move from it is to go to the toilet as there are so many hawkers selling you pretty much anything you require from books, drinks to a BBQ of fresh fish. There is a big nightlife here with a couple of main place to go to. These are the Why Not Bar and the Sailing Club which is right on the beach but more expensive for it.

Ho Chi Min City (Saigon)

This is the Vietnam you see in the films. Streets packed out with so many bikes, fumes that make it hard to breathe and just general chaos. There a quite a few museums here to visit which are mainly to do with the war but are all worth a visit and even the strongest man will hold back tears at the photos of the suffering they endured.

From here you do a day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels where the North had a series of small tunnels which they used to fight the south. You can go down some of these tunnels but be warned that they are very small and it’s best not to do it on a hangover like I did. Also here you can fire an array of automatic weapons and rifles which is not that cheap as you pay per bullet.

Cambodia

Cambodia has had quite a nasty past with its dictator Pol Pot but is recovering maybe not as fast as its neighbors’ but it is getting there. Cambodia is surrounded by Vietnam, Thailand and Laos and has the Mekong go through the country into Laos.

Phnom Penh

Is a typical Asian Capitol city, will not loads to do but getting there is a great experience if you come from Vietnam. From Saigon you can get a boat which will take you 2 days to get here but you do see some real Vietnam and Cambodia on the way.

The two main places to see in and around Phnom Penh are the Killing Fields where around 200,000 people were executed during 1975-1979 when the Khmer Rouge reigned. You can see millions of bones and thousands of skulls that have been recovered from the pits.

Also go to S-21 which used to be a high school which was converted to a prison also during the Khmer Rouge where they imprisoned up to 20,000 people and repeatedly tortured and killed from this.

Two to three times a day they show a film which goes into detail of what went on in the prison with interviews from survivors and prison guards.

Sihanoukville

Is a beach resort about 3 to 4 hours bus ride away from Phnom Penh and has a decent enough beach which all long has hostels/guesthouses, restaurants and bars where you can chat with new found friends and enjoy a nice cold beer. You can dive here but I would not waste your money as the visibility is very poor and the reefs not having much sea life.

Siem Reap/Angkor Wat

Siem Reap is the city closest to the temples of Angkor Wat. The town itself does not have much to offer apart from a market in the centre of town where you can get some new clothes and souvenirs. Every night most people head down to the aptly named Bar Street to meet and hang out with friends.

The temples of Angkor are quite spectacular and are very worth the visit. You get the choice of either a 1 day or 3 day pass. It is recommended to go for sunrise over Angkor Wat as this is quite amazing but can get very busy.

There is so many temples to see here most still in great condition. Although my favorite is the one which has been taken over by the jungle and most of it are ruins.

You can either hire a tuk tuk driver to take you around which is advised if you do the one day trip or just hire a bike and go around at you own pace.

Laos

Laos is landlocked and borders Burma, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Vietnam. Laos was involved in the Vietnam War mainly due to its proximity to the country and is one of the most under developed country in the region.

Vang Vieng

The town where you leave remembering nothing. This place is just one big drunken haze. You get a tractor inner tube and float down a river and stop off at bars on route and get free shots of lao lao whiskey and then drink buckets of more lao lao whiskey and coke until 6pm then when you think you have enough you go over to an island which is just bars (smile is the best) until middnight when the curfew kicks in. Love this place :D

Try the rope swings at each of the bars. The first bar has the biggest whatever other bars may claim.

Luang Prabang

Very beautiful town and is very quiet compared with Vang Vieng. The night market seems to run on forever with lots of goodies. Also if you go here you have to go Bowling one evening after 11pm – you will see what I mean.

Jigsaw Puzzle History – an International Pastime

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The jigsaw puzzle is one of the oldest forms of entertainment and dates back to the late 1700s. The jigsaw has passed through many stages of development to become today’s modern pastime. Jigsaw puzzles have a range of uses, from entertainment to education to physical and emotional therapy.

A Beginning as an Educational Tool

The forerunner of the modern jigsaw puzzle was invented in 1767 by John Spilsbury as a teaching device to help children to learn the geography of England and Wales. It was a wooden map with no interlocking pieces. In fact, interlocking pieces weren’t introduced to jigsaws until much later, with the invention of saws that could cut with the accuracy needed to produce the interlock. From this inauspicious beginning through the 1800s, jigsaw puzzles caught on and grew as a popular pastime.

Jigsaws: The New Favorite Parlor Game

By the early 1900s the jigsaw puzzle became all the rage with adults in both the US and the UK. Because of the cost of producing these wooden puzzles, they were primarily the domain of the wealthy, and jigsaw puzzles began to rival bridge and lawn Bowling as parlor games. As puzzling grew, major game manufacturers, including Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley began to produce jigsaw puzzles.

Introduction of Shaped and Interlocking Pieces

The popularity of jigsaws in the first decade of the 1900s lead Parker Brothers to begin to develop puzzles with interlocking and shaped pieces. Also around this same time cardboard jigsaws began to be produced via die-cutting. Most manufacturers, however, stuck with making wooden puzzles, as the general belief was that there was no market for cheap, cardboard puzzles.

Depression-Era Growth of Jigsaws

With the advent of the Great Depression, demand for inexpensive cardboard, die-cut puzzles exploded. Families discovered that jigsawing was not only entertaining, but a great diversion from the stresses of life. Also, once complete, a jigsaw puzzle could be traded with a friend, continuing the trend of inexpensive entertainment.

A Boost from Advertising

At this time, companies also started using puzzles for promotional giveaways with many stores offering a puzzle with a purchase. At the height of the depression, in the early 1930s, the “Jig of the Week” was introduced and sold at newsstands. Several series became available and being the first to assemble that week’s puzzle resulted in bragging rights for the solver. Economic woes and the rise in popularity of inexpensive puzzles took its toll on the wooden puzzle makers, although some retained a loyal following.

Introduction of the Personalized Jigsaw

During the rise of cardboard puzzles a new manufacturer, Par Puzzles, came into popularity. These hand-cut, finely crafted puzzles were produced by brothers who catered to the affluent, including movie stars and royalty. Par’s claim to fame was personalized puzzles, often cut with their owner’s names as pieces.

Today’s Jigsaw Puzzles

Since the height of popularity during the depression, fascination with the jigsaw puzzle has ebbed and flowed. After World War II rising wages resulted in higher cost and lower sales of wooden jigsaw puzzles. At this same time, improvements in printing and reproduction of fine art on jigsaws resulted in increased sales of cardboard puzzled. Today, most puzzles are cardboard, but there are a handful of manufacturers still making high-quality, wooden jigsaw puzzles. A variety of puzzles are now available, from irregularly shaped puzzles, to doubled-sided jigsaws to 3D jigsaws. They continue to fascinate us and provide a way to bring people together with the common goal of being the one who puts in that last piece.

What did farmers learn to do after the dust bowl drought, c. 1935?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

What did they learn after The Dust Bowl Drought in the 1930’s? Like what I mean is what techniques did they learn to say… prepare for another drought?

President Roosevelt ordered that the Civilian Conservation Corps plant a huge belt of more than 200 million trees from Canada to Abilene, Texas, to break the wind, hold water in the soil, and hold the soil itself in place. The administration also began to educate farmers on soil conservation and anti-erosion techniques, including crop rotation, strip farming, contour plowing, terracing and other beneficial farming practices.

Model Train Hobby – Why Building Model Trains Could Be Right For You

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

If you are bored with your tiddly winks club, your monster truck has broken down one too many times, and knitting isn’t your thing.  Perhaps you should be looking for a new hobby.  Bowling is hard on the back, gemstone collecting is a little too expensive, and cooking just might expand your waste line too much.  So what do you choose?  Model trains just might be for you.

The uninitiated may look at model trains as toys, not something a grown person would want to be associated with.  But a closer look into the hobby will show that not only is this a grown up hobby, it is rewarding from a technical, historical, and aesthetic standpoint as well.  Model trains have been around for over a century and while they started out as marketing tools for the real railroads, enthusiasts soon demanded more and more to satisfy their thirst for this rewarding hobby.

?

So is train modeling for you?  Let’s take a look. There are several different aspects to the hobby that may be appealing.  First is the history.  Model train enthusiasts pride themselves on building accurate scale models of real railroads.  In order to preserve that accuracy, some knowledge of history is required.  Learning about an industry that was once the primary method of long distance travel can be very interesting.

A second attraction to model trains is doing something that requires working with your hands to make something that can be displayed to others with pride.  Whether it is the scenery, the benchwork, or the trains themselves, this can be a fairly technical hobby that requires some level of skill in working with your hands.  There are aspects of woodworking, metalworking, mechanics, electricity, automation, and crafts all rolled up into this hobby.  If you are only interested in one of these things, the others can mostly be purchased as kits so that you do not have to be a jack of all trades.

One more thing that may interest those with children or grandchildren is the opportunity to share a hobby with them.  Because these are “toy sized” trains, they are often seen by children as interesting and exciting, but because they are not toys, and require some skill to operate, adults also find them interesting and exciting.  This is a great hobby for adults and children to enjoy together.  It is totally appropriate for everyone, men, women, boys and girls!

So if your interest is piqued, perhaps the model train hobby is for you.  If you would like to learn more, there are many resources you can find both locally in hobby stores, in model train clubs and on the internet.  Check it out!

Don’t Play Head Games to Win Ex Back

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

After your partner dumps you, you can act on many theories to win ex back.  Many advisors will tell you to play head games with your ex.  But by messing with her head to win her back, you’re building a weak foundation upon which you can rebuild your relationship if and when you reconcile.

When you were dating, she’d send you text messages all day long.  Now you get zip.  It would be a good idea for you to call her once or twice a week to remain in touch and maintain the possibility of reuniting.

Be sure to call on her birthday and other important days.  You can also mail her a note or thoughtful gift when you are trying to win ex back.

If you see a magazine article she might like, mail it to her with a brief message.  Include her on your email list to friends when you distribute news, personal updates or jokes.

You must decide if and how much to date other women when you are also campaigning to win ex back.  If you dedicated your quest to win ex back, it’s not a good move to date others.

Even if you are only contemplating a renewed relationship, don’t sleep with any other woman.  Perhaps this bit advice is the opposite of what you’ve heard.  Some advisors tell you to date continually to stir up your ex and incite jealousy.  But such games will really foul things up if you do reunite.

Stay cool if she dates other guys.  She broke up with you. She can do what she likes. You can make gains by analyzing the men she’s dating to determine what she wants in a partner.

For example, if she left you because you were taking your relationship for granted, she might be impressed by men who dazzle her with attention.  And, maybe, if your tastes favored Bowling and beer and now she’s drawn to musicians and writers, you might want to develop at least an appreciation of the arts and of your sensitive side to win ex back.

By analyzing your ex, you can get a pretty good idea as to the type of guy she needs and wants.

Because you’re no longer a couple, certain barriers have grown between the two of you.  This can makes it easier for you to see what she needs from a man because your own baggage and feelings are out of the picture.  Remain sensitive to her words — what she says and what she doesn’t say.  And closely scrutinize her actions.

Don’t show your cards.  She’s got the power in the relationship.  By pouring out your emotions, you increase her power.  By telling her she’s your one and only, she can manipulate your destiny.  When you keep your feelings to yourself, you can maintain the strength you have to rebuild the relationship after you reconnect.

While you’re still separated, improve yourself.  Lift some weights, jog and work out regularly.  Put some definition into your abs.  Perhaps you should also consider a new haircut that benefits your features.

And make sure you improve your mind as well as your body.  Devoting time to improving yourself on all fronts will make you a better catch for your ex.

When all is said and done, you can attempt head games or you can do your best to repair your previous problems in order to get your ex back.  But when you pay attention to the problems, you’re building a solid foundation for when you’ve come through to win ex back.

Learn all you need to know about how you can win your ex back

Click here http://You-Can-Get-Back-Together.info for great advice and insight on how you can win ex back.

A Male Menopause? Top 5 Andropause Symptoms

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Picture this–you are a forty year old man reading the newspaper on a Sunday morning. You used to enjoy this weekly ritual, but you feel irritable today. Actually, you haven’t felt like yourself recently. You are happy with your job and your relationships, but you feel tired and depressed and you don’t know why. You haven’t been sleeping well and your sex life isn’t what it used to be.

Before you reach for another cup of coffee, ask yourself–have I had my testosterone levels checked to see if I have andropause?

Understanding Male Andropause:
Andropause is a medical condition caused by low testosterone levels in men. Low testosterone levels affect some men in their late 20s, and all men experience the symptoms of andropause to some extent in their 40s and beyond. Andropause in men is similar to menopause in women, except the symptoms of andropause (and the intensity of those symptoms) can vary greatly. It is estimated that at least 95% of men in their fifties experience the symptoms of andropause.

Andropause has received little medical attention until recently, as doctors attributed the symptoms of andropause to old age or depression. However, andropause is a real condition and it can be treated. The symptoms of andropause vary from male to male, and the top 5 symptoms are listed below.

The Top 5 Symptoms of Andropause:

1. Depression
2. Sweating and hot flashes
3. Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction
4. Fatigue
5. Poor concentration and memory

Andropause may be accompanied by other symptoms. Below are additional symptoms.

More Symptoms of Andropause:

- Decreased muscle mass
- Sleep disturbance
- Osteoporosis
- Body fat gain, particularly abdominal weight gain
- Aches and pains
- Loss of height

Ways to alleviate the symptoms of andropause:

There are several uniformly accepted changes to human behavior that can have a noticeable impact on the effects of the progression of andropause. Three basic, but trusted principles are:

- Exercise regularly
- Eat well
- Moderate consumption of alcohol

Exercise:
Andropause symptoms directly correlate with depression. Exercising will improve your mood and make you feel better by increasing endorphins. Consider these suggestions: go for a run, play tennis, make a trip to the Bowling alley, or grab a basketball and head to the court.

Eating well:

Eating well can have a positive impact on your energy and mood. Try to incorporate Omega-3 fats, folic acid and B12, and Vitamin D into your diet, which have been shown to decrease depression. You can get Omega-3 fats from salmon, walnuts, and flaxseed, folic acid from oatmeal, broccoli, organs, and fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals, B12 from cottage cheese, lean beef, and eggs, and Vitamin D from milk.

Alcohol:

Each body reacts differently to alcohol consumption. Be mindful of your current consumption levels and frequency of consumption and consider the following–alcohol lowers serotonin and norpinephrine levels, which acts as a depressant. Remember, depression is too often a misdiagnosis of andropause given by family doctors.

Methods of Andropause Treatment:

The most common andropause treatment is testosterone replacement therapy. Consult your physician to determine if testosterone replacement therapy is the right treatment for you–he will be able to measure the level of testosterone in your blood. If you area candidate for replacement therapy, your physician can explain the alternatives available for treatment, which include skin patches and creams among other sources.

Most men notice the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy within 2-4 weeks. The benefits are listed below:

- Reduced fatigue
- Improved quality of sleep
- Improvement in mood and sense of well being
- Increased energy
- Increased body mass, muscle strength, and bone density
- Increased male libido (male sex drive)

Too many men are being misdiagnosed and improperly treated by general family physicians. If you suspect you have andropause symptoms or want to learn more about andropause treatment, it is encouraged you do some independent research. There are several online sites that can provide information about andropause and male menopause solutions.
