The man of the manor and I have been invited to a “Games Night” with friends this coming Saturday night. This is a regular event usually hosted by various friends at their various places of residence on a monthly basis.

We have not been to a ‘Games Night’ for a little while – one of the reasons is perhaps that, at the last jolly get-together, one of my dearest friends and I almost got into a pummel over “Prince Charles”.

I know that probably begs the question “Why would two sassy, intelligent women get into a sushi-throwing stoush over a man who talk to plants, has ears like satellite dishes and wants to be reincarnated as a Tampax tampon?”

Well, the answer is:  Pictionary.

You see, when the egg-timer was flipped over the onus was on me to sketch the delightful HRH in order to beat the other sad sacks who were still trying to convey by pencil such easy tasks as “Ventilate” and “Myxomatosis” (Very easy to draw dead bunnies).

As far as I was concerned, this depiction was the nail in the proverbial, non-verbal coffin:

However, my friend sought to disagree. Her interpretation of my brush-strokes was more along the lines of:

Reasoned debate and discussion over my Pictionary prowess soon deteriorated into an international incident, with French Onion dip in the hair, and horrendous, cruel name-calling abound (The “lipstick liberal” still smarts…)

In retrospect, I can understand why she is the celebrated Art critic and why I was evicted (and told never to return upon fear of death) from Grade 8 Art class.

The bottom line is: I am a very bad loser.

I have been called everything from the “Yahtzee Nazi” to the “Go Fish Bitch”.  I play to win, and dammit, I don’t care if you are a cute little Scottish terrier, if you land on my “Mayfair” square with a hotel, I’ll take your hard earned pink and purple money and toss you to the curb.

God forbid, that you are my 500 partner and call “six spades” without the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, ten-two AND Joker (I’ll see you outside buddy, and know that I have the guacamole dip, and am not afraid to use it)

I guess I could put this demented, competitive streak in me down to genetics. My father, not so long ago, was playing Trivial Pursuit with his group of regular gaming people at his own house. When the answer to the question ” What colour is Yaks milk?” turned out to be “Pink” and not “Cerise”, my Dad leapt to his feet, emitted an indignant and blood-curdling yowl and proceeded to hurl the game off the verandah.

Of course, it took a moment for him to realize that it was not actually ‘his’ multi-coloured pie pieces that were now scattered from Labrador all the way down to Main Beach, rather the brand-new edition brought along by one of mother’s friends.

So there, the secret is out. I am a terribly competitive kind of gal!

The problem with this “win at all costs” attitude is that I have, I admit, an appalling lack of talent for a lot of the tasks at hand.

Every time we play “Cranium”, my play-dough offerings inevitably end up resembling something creepy and embarrassingly phallic, and for all of my pre-game preening and strutting, my tennis ball will, nine times out of ten, end up in the mouth of the man-eating Doberman over the fence.

This sad fact could not have been more perfectly illustrated, than when my hubby and I decided to go Ten Pin Bowling last Saturday.

I love Bowling. You get to throw a heavy ball at ten wobbly pins (and imagine them as dopey clients you had to deal with during the week), and you get to drink beer!!! As it happens, how well I bowl, is in direction proportion to how many stubbies I guzzle.

That’s how it usually happens anyway…..

On this particular day, we got our shoes, our refreshments and enthusiastically headed over to smack some pins down. It suddenly dawned on me that those around me were rather short.

Short, loud, and covered in chocolate cake.

We had arrived in the midst of little Johnnies 8th birthday party. There were at least 50 kids between the ages of two and ten running around high on sugar-fuelled adrenalin.

This didn’t deter us too much. We kicked off, and I smiled sweetly (if not, a little condescendingly) at a mother next to us who was encouraging her 7 year old little princess in pink to roll the ball.

“Leave it to professionals, Cindy Brady” I thought to myself.

Five ales and seven frames later, with a cringingly sick score of twelve, I turned my head to Pollyanna next door.

Her mother sashayed over and purred to me in my ear “She’s a natural isn’t she?” she gushed, “I think she has an amazing way of balancing the spin on the balls!”

I smiled, and refrained from commenting on how her daughters amazing talent for balancing balls was a must for her future, shining career with the Big Bowls league…or perhaps with QANTAS.

That was enough for me. I grabbed my beer, dignity, and husband (mid throw) and marched out.

Losing a tight game of backgammon or even ‘Operation’ was one thing.

Being thrashed by Dakota Fanning, drugged up on Jelly-Belly jelly beans was just too much for this poor little ego.

So back to our upcoming “Games Night” this weekend -  I am quite excited about this.

Our hosts will be serving good wine and some interesting cuisine from  the African country of Eritrea, before we partake in the much-anticipated “Scattergories” competition.

Food from Eritrea is an eclectic mix of meat and vegetables which you eat with your hands.

Sharp eating utensils not required.

After you move ahead from a leisure bowler to taking on a league position, the bar slides way up somewhat higher and even in case you are not aggressive, the plastic house ball isn’t necessarily going to be adequate. When it comes time to go shopping for your personal bowling ball, prepare to be slapped with the world of geometry and understanding the statistics involved is extremely important when coming up with your final choice when putting together your pin-destruction strategy.

If you have had a chance to view some online bowling ball reviews, you might have noticed several of the technical specs that happen to be included in them. Of course, some of the numbers are general, but let’s pull back the covers and look at the facts of some of the definitions of these values. I’ll use the features of my current strike ball, the Storm Reign Bowling Ball.

Every single bowling ball that is to be used on the lanes is required to be approved by the USBC (United States Bowling Congress) and along with each ball, you’ll find limits to how the bowling ball is designed along with just how the bowling ball will interact with specific bowling styles. Again, using the Storm Reign bowling ball, here are different specs and their meanings:

Coverstock: Reactive Pearl RG: 2.55 Differential (DIFF): .052 Flare: 4″ – 5″ Length: 15.5 Backend: 16.5 Box Finish: 1500 Grit Polish

Now that we’ve gone over the specific specs of the bowling ball, let’s check out the definition of each attribute:

Coverstock The coverstock is responsible for the actual contact with the lane, but also is essential could be the form of coverstock simply because it must support the dynamic of the internal workings – or core – of the bowling ball to take action properly. Certainly, there are several several types of coverstock such as: Polyester, Standard Urethane, Reactive and Particle Resin. Each coverstock performs a different purpose in the way the ball responds to the oil on the lanes, for instance, a Polyester coverstock has a smoother surface and is good for rolling straight balls.

RG (Radius of Gyration) The RG, or radius of gyration is a measurement of the effective weight distribution in a ball as it refers to the moment of inertia. It essentially can be an indication of the resistance to rotation motion. It is similar to the square root of the moment of inertia divided by the weight of the bowling ball.

Differential (DIFF) This specific property can determine the actual track flare potential. The greatest allowable differential RG is 0.080 inches. The more the differential RG, the more potential for track flare. Track flare increases the friction in between the bowling ball and the lane and determines how much flare or arc the ball will produce while traveling the lane.

Flare Track flare is the migration of the ball track from the bowler‘s axis after release to the axis at the moment of impact with the pins. Enhanced track flare gets higher spinning energy and impacting power. Lessened track flare produces greater ball skid.

Length Length is an indicator of how far a ball will travel down the lane prior to the bowling ball starts to hook. The higher the amount, the further down the lane it travels before the ball will hook into the pocket.

Backend The value here provides you with a rating on which the ball is likely to generate the most power after the hook. The greater the value, the more powerful the backend movement can be.

Box Finish The box finish the the factory polish grit used upon finalization of engineering of the bowling ball. Using a different finish can have an impact on the way the bowling ball interacts with the lane so be mindful if you choose to have the Bowling ball refinished while at the pro shop.

The first traces of the game can be traced to ancient Egypt. Some remnants of this ancient form of the game where discovered in a boys’ grave in the 1930′s.

In the modern world though, we can see the came first come into the scene as early as 1366 in England. There is even a rumor that King Edward III outlawed the game because his troops were neglecting their archery practice in order to bowl.

The game of bowling we play today was not always played with 10 pins. It actually started as a nine-pin game played throughout Europe. One very unique variation of the game of bowling is still being played in Edinburgh. The player takes a ball without holes and heaves it at the pins from between his legs, which results in the player landing on his stomach.

You can then calculate the average acceleration, and if you know the balls weight, you can then calculate the average force, although remember that some of this force will come from gravity as the ball is falling.

To eliminate the effect of gravity, perhaps you could see how fast the ball is rolling after it rolls down a slope from the same height, and remove this sped from the figures you use.

I would say your best bet is a Powerball (the official one not a crappy copy) they’re really good, fun once you get the hang of them and great for building up your forearms and wrist strength (plus if you’re good get yourself entered on the world leader board!) They also have a lifetime guarantee and are nearly impossible to break anyway.

This video continues the three part series from a reasonable 600 series (3 games) in the Monday trios league.

We start well into game one, with four strikes in a row, followed by a spare. (For those of you unfamiliar with league or competition play, note how we swap lanes with each frame.)

I pulled the first one a bit, and got lucky with a Brooky strike, but the next three were nice flush pocket balls.

At this point, I was still having a little trouble with the hop. (You can hear my team mate Dave – filming with my phone – talking about it.) Note how apparent the hop is in the second strike. But in the third strike, I’m much more stable at the foul line. As mentioned in this previous video, this is because I stayed behind the ball more in the follow through. Look how much more length I get on the ball down the lane as a result. I think you’ll agree that the third strike was a far better shot than the first two.

In the next frame, a good pocket ball gets an unlucky result, leaving the 7-pin… easily spared. I tend to stick with my reactive ball for the cross lane spares on the left, unless the middle of the lane is significantly wetter than the outside, in which case I might choose to use the plastic ball. When the middle is much wetter, it can be difficult to predict how much the reactive ball will turn. This is where experience and good lane-reading skills counts for far more than mathematical rules like the 3-6-9 rule or the 2-4-6 rule. If you get an extreme block’ condition, the ball might turn extremely aggressively on the dry boards outside of 2nd arrow, but might go dead straight through the middle!

The video then continues with the start of game 2. In the first frame, I pulled it again, going high on the nose and leaving an easy (3-6) spare. If you are going to use a reactive ball to take spares on the right like this, you really need to trust the ball! Dont be afraid to throw it out to the edge. But remember, the extreme angle means you’re more likely to chop out a pin, so you might want to use the spare ball instead.

The next frame sees a lucky Brooklyn strike on the left. In the next, I go across the headpin again, and leave the 6-pin. This time, I opt to use the plastic spare ball. Let’s be honest… there’s no way the reactive is going to stay that far over to the right!

We join game 2 later to see a nice flush pocket ball, which leaves the dreaded 10-pin standing. Nice and easy.

I finish off game two with a solid turkey in the 10th frame. Note that I switched to a different ball for the second strike of the frame. Although the first ball was a good strike, the increasing number of high/Brooklyn hits is a strong indicator that the lane is just getting too dry for this ball.

While you might compensate by just throwing the ball faster, I prefer to switch to a ball with a less-reactive coverstock and drilled to go longer.

The video doesn’t really do justice to the difference down the lane. It does break a lot later, honestly!
