Becoming a single parent isn’t an end. It’s a beginning. Your new lifestyle is full of responsibility and challenges. It may be more important now than ever that you find time for yourself. You need to relax and have fun. It may have been a while, but you can date now.

You may not be ready to enter into a new relationship, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out and have a good time with friends. Dating old friends is a great way to re-enter the single world and renew old friendships. They already know you, and they’re easy to talk to. You need someone now to talk to and to ask for advice. Old friends may also be a source for help around the house or at work.

But if you’re interested in meeting new people and getting into a more serious relationship, you may want to do some real-life dating. But dating as a new single parent can present unique challenges. Demands on your time may already be great.

Taking care of the kids, earning a living, and maintaining your household are time-consuming chores. That makes it even more important to make time for your own fun and relaxation. But time management skills will definitely be needed to keep your life from being chaotic and stressful.

You may be emotionally raw at this time. Whether you’ve lost your partner through separation, divorce, or death, you’re going through some really big life changes. You need to be careful not to jump into the first relationship that comes along. You need to have fun, but you also need some time to heal and become independent again.

Am I ready to date yet?

Are you prepared to tell your children you’re dating? Your kids are also going through a big change, and they may be insecure or jealous if a new adult is introduced to the family. You may also need to tie up loose ends from the previous relationship. There may be financial and legal matters still open that must be closed. If your partner passed away, you’ll need to settle the estate, dispose of property, and finalize insurance issues. Better to focus on the business at hand while you’re grieving than to introduce a new complication into an already-complicated life.

You also need to take time to help your children grieve the loss. They may be feeling abandoned, and they’ll need your love, support, and encouragement to move forward. And they need to build a new relationship with you, one where you’re the only parent. Dating too soon can cheat them of this important time with you and create behavioral problems that are not easy to solve. Take it slow for their sake and for yours.

How do single parents find people to date?

It’s probably been a long time since you were in the dating scene, and you may have lost touch with your single friends and activities. One way to meet new people is through your friends. Perhaps your best friend knows someone they think would be perfect for you. Take a chance. Go on a blind date.

You also have a constraint that many singles don’t: time. It’s important for you to plan your social activities well in advance so you can get a baby-sitter or make other arrangements for your children. So, whatever you do to meet new people can’t be a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Many areas have singles groups where you can meet other unattached people. As long as you don’t have to make commitments, this is a great way to meet people. Group social activities are fun and safe. You get a chance to get to know people before being alone with them.

You need to be very clear in your own mind about where you are and what you want. Perhaps you only want companionship and social contact. If you’re not ready to get serious, let your dates know. Don’t allow yourself to become more involved than you can handle emotionally. Your first few dates shouldn’t be serious, and you don’t need to involve your children with your casual dates.

But if you’re lonely and feel you need someone to love, you may be more interested in getting serious. First, you must ask yourself why. Getting into a serious relationship because you’re lonely isn’t a great idea. You want to get involved with a person, not just fill a hole in your life. Be sure of your motives before you allow things to get to serious.

What to do when on a date?

You’ll want to know that your dates will be both fun and safe. Your family depends on you, and taking chances to date isn’t wise. Always be sure someone knows where you’re going and who you’re going with. Let them know when you’ll be home, and take your cell phone with you in case of an emergency. Let your date know about your family and that you might get a call. No surprises is a good policy.

When you go out, you’ll want to do something that helps you get to know each other. Look for places where you can talk and activities that encourage conversation and interaction. Movies aren’t a good idea for those first few dates because they don’t provide a good get-to-know-you environment. Better to go Bowling or play miniature golf than to go to a movie.

For first dates especially, it’s important that you go to public places. Your personal safety is very important, and you don’t want to take chances with people you don’t know. You might even want to arrange to meet your date somewhere so that you aren’t dependent on them for your ride home.

I am a pretty good bowler and from experience I highly recommend using your thumb!! Using no thumb will make you fairly susceptible to injury. As for finding the right ball for you, I suggest seeing a pro in your local Bowling alley’s pro shop. He will be able to help you make the right decision for your style, age, weight, height, etc.

P.S. – The lane oil matters a lot!

Dogs can smell and hear way better than we can, something in the bowl of water may have set him off, or he may have not wanted any water at all. He may prefer to drink out of puddles of water other than bowls. There’s tons of legitimate reasons why he could have done this. Am I going to sit and list them all, no, because I’m not retarded.

* Tone and Shape – are two of the 4 elements of drawing. The other two are line and texture.

In this commentary we will discuss the idea of plasticity and how it relates to the concepts of tone and form.

* Elasticity – is the visual push and pull of lights and darks which, when presented in a harmonious entirety, defines the three- dimensional forms of a portrait.

The human eye can discriminate between many more values than the 12 we generally use in a drawing. That means that the artist must “trick” the eye into believing that it is seeing more than is actually on the drawing paper. To this end we must grasphow light behaves and values are perceived.

The trick is to manipulate the eye’s natural tendency towards finality, i.e., towards finishing a drawing even if parts are not actually there. But the eye only does that without protest if the plasticity is harmonious. Only then will the viewer emotionally connect.

The subject of creating harmonious plasticity is broad. In this commentary we limit ourselves to realistic portraiture.

* Tones – are just degrees of darkness and lightness. We generally limit ourselves to twelve discrete values.

To grasp how a form is rendered we need to grasp how light operates and how values enter into this. There are 2 properties of light relevant to drawing:

(1) Light travels in a straight line and bounces off surfaces.

(2) The intensity of light diminishes quickly with distance.

From these properties it follows that:

* As a form turns away from the light source it dims.

* When two planes face the light they will have different values if their distances from the light source are different. For instance, the cheek closest to the light source will have a lighter tone than the one which is farther away.

* The lightest light on a form is the “highlight”. The highlight is always on a plane that is directly facing the light source.

* Most of a portrait’s tone is so-called halftone. That is, anything in-between pure white and pure black. Halftone rendering is at the same time the most enjoyable and the most difficult part of drawing.

* As a form turns completely away from the light source it slowly descends into shadow, towards totally black (i.e., the absence of light). However, there is more to it.

* There is also reflected light from one plane onto another. Remember, light bounces off surfaces but with diminished intensity. So be cautious not to overdo your reflected light.

* There is also the crest of the shadow which is the darkest value on the form. This band of darkness lies between the darkest halftones and the reflected light. This band of darkness is called the Line of Appelle. It is critical to capture its form correctly because it determines the form’s volume.

* As a form turns away from the light, the half-tone plane changes have a soft edge. The quality of this edge is determined by several factors the most critical of which are the amount of plane change, the intensity of light, and the texture of the surface.

* In portrait drawing there are also cast shadows which are hard-edged and very dark and are cast by one form upon another. An example is the shadow that is cast by the nose onto the cheek.

A superb exercise for comprehending the idea of plasticity is to sketch a white Bowling pin. For a more controlled situation you can build yourself a black box with one side open that fully controls the light of one source and blocks out the light of other sources that could disturb the situation.

In closing, the use of the twelve-value scale together with the above tips allows you to create the necessary plasticity for your subjects.

It has faced me with my first situation of being unsure of what do to with my lil lady & Co. Everyone’s doing great. Had a few hiccups by letting people into her too much and it was a bit touch and go with whether she was going to mind the babies (see http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnTKNCEH2qkjiqwCvd1xtjMazKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20090905064824AAZ3iN8 if you want to read all about that – my entire question didn’t come out there however so my important questions go here! If you have any further help with that one though, please feel free to comment!)
She’s back in her room now and has remained there for the last 2 days back to just popping down to say hello – I have a few final questions on her though!

She hops in and out of the box when im in the room with her (probably when im not there too) she does jump back in once they start crying or anything so she’s fine! I just wanted to make sure that’s okay and normal for dam’s that have gotten used to the mothering thing… She tucks the pups up to keep them warm and everyone’s cosy to touch so no heat escaping fears (theres a hot water bottle if needed) I just want to make sure she’s okay to be getting sociable again (the fear of rejection thing scarred me – I’m paranoid about being vigilant for signs to watch!)

Also, is there anything I can give her to help with her up keep of milk production? The pups are hungry lil buggers and twice she’s ran out of milk. I give her bowls of kitten milk (see previous link) I had been giving her a condensed milk(tiny amounts)/warm water mix however after hearing what happened pups when honey was given to the nursing mother stopped for fear of the sugar content doing the same thing.. (horrid tales of a litter of pups anus’ closing over preventing excretion – poor things!) and moved to ensure securing the proper pups milk. Any other calcium increasing tips? Everyone in the last thread answered that with ’she’s producing enough milk if they’re fat’/’she has enough milk i promise!’.. Well, No. She isn’t and no she doesn’t. Cause she’s running out when they’re hungry and I have half hour sessions of crying puppies who wont drink the formula milk and an increasingly distressed mum who takes a while to calm down.
So no – there isn’t enough milk. Does further feeding help increase her stores? Weight has dropped off her (normal??) Shes back to what she looked like pre-pregnancy. (Pups aren’t even 1 week yet) Except for the teats obviously.

She still isn’t drinking bowls of plain water so I’ve kept putting a drop of milk in warm water and she drinks that okay. People have recommended a pinch of salt in her water to help with water retention, some clarification on that please :-s, or is there anything else I could give her to do the same thing which won’t pass on to the pups? (please only address this point if you’re an experienced breeder or vet/veterinary nurse – and please state you are!!)

Regarding the little guys: Everyone’s growing huge. They’re quiet until they’re hungry or need warming. 3 are enormous, the other 2 grow to the size the big one’s were the day previous (i.e All gaining weight) Everyone has big fat bellies and no deformities are present. Day 2 visit to the vet went excellent. My issue is: This is my 1st litter (and last for a long long time!!) and I unfortunately have no breeders or kennels/rescue centres near me to go get a crash course in puppy care, So I was hoping someone could take the time to give me a week by week of their development. I recognise this could entail a lot so if someone even has a reputable website to direct me too that would be awesome (experience is always better though!)

Understandably so breeders don’t seem to make this information readily available online (otherwise everyone would be breeding ‘cute little puppies!!!!’ – that’s fair enough!) but I still would like to know everyone is moving along okay and know when I should be concerned of someone being under developed. This is the most important question really!!

o0o0o one more: Walks for the Mom. Would it be okay to take her out for a quick walk? She had been getting fed up and restless so I did take her for a 5 min walk (she didn’t want to go far herself before coming home), Obviously not if its raining so she doesn’t chill the pups hoping back in, but again the rejection fear stopped me doing that until someone could confirm what they do with their dam’s – she was coming back – eating and not moving far from the pups when I did – and wrecked. she had a huge sleep.

I think that’s all my fears and questions for the mean time. Anything anyone may think useful to me would be grateful too, and much much appreciated.
