I’d like to get a bowling ball that can get a nice hook.
Also, when I go to the bowling alleys, how do I know which balls are hard rubber and won’t hook and which ones that will hook better… Cos I am practicing my form, and I don’t know if my form is wrong, or if the ball just won’t hook cos of what it is made of. I have my own good pair of bowling shoes.
It’s based upon your style of bowling, what weight is perfect for you, aggressiveness of the coverstock/core combination, how long you have been bowling and what lane condition you regularly are bowling on. Also, practicing and trying to master your "form" is the best way to gain more experience and boost your skill in bowling. A good feel when getting fitted for a bowling ball is what you need when it gets drilled. Soft of rigid thumb slugs, thumb inserts and finger inserts are what most bowlers use instead of feeling the sometimes rough insides of the bowling ball without them. Some bowlers use wrist supports, but most that decide to stay bowling will purchase their own shoes and accessories as well as the required "first shot" and "spare" bowling balls.
Bowling ball coverstocks range from polyester, rubber, plastic, urethane, reactive urethane, reactive resin, particle and "veneers". These have basically different reactions on a wide range of lane conditions, but can be made to act similarly due to the way the ball is drilled as well as placement of thumb and finger holes in relation to the "pin". Those exotic drillings can help make a Bowling ball go straighter as well as hook more.
Ask your local pro shop for assistance with which equipment is right for you, or if you’re taking lessons, ask your certified USBC coach.
Entry level Bowling Balls can range from $50 to $100 and are either rubber, polyester, plastic, urethane or reactive urethane.
Intermediate level bowling balls can range from $100 to $150 and are either reactive urethane, reactive resin or particle.
Advanced or "performance" level bowling balls can range from $100 to $275 and are either reactive resin, particle or "veneer".
Brunswick, Morich, Elite, Ebonite, Hammer, AMF, Storm, Lane Masters, Roto Grip and Track are the major bowling ball manufacturers and can be purchased online at bowling.com, bowlingballsales.com, bowlingball.com or bowlersparadise.com, which are retailers with either free shipping or low prices. Good luck!
