What is the difference between a 1000 and a 4000 finish on a bowling ball?

I am learning how to purchase a Bowling ball. The many specs are confusing me. Is there a web site or book to help me learn what hook potential, revs etc. mean?

The finish on the ball indicates how the ball reacts to the lane. A 4000 grit finish will slide more and have a lot more back-end reaction. Go to youtube.com and type in any bowling ball. there you can see how each ball rolls and reacts to the lane.
